Arthur Marshall Loxahatchee Wildlife Refuge.( www.fws.gov/loxahatchee) Good nature trails on catwalks in the swamp. Take a clipboard and pencil and let your child sketch his/her favorite plant or animal along the catwalk.

Young Eagles Program, (www.youngeagles.org)sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA). Call Owen Gassaway III at Florida Airmotive, Lantana Airport, to get a free ride for your child, from ages 8 - 16 (after you sign permission papers). After the flight, each child receives a certificate naming him/her a Young Eagle.
Regional Science Fair – This is held yearly at the South Florida Fairgrounds. It’s lots of fun to tour and see the variety of interesting projects on display. Call the School District of Palm Beach County Office – 434-8000 – ask for the Elementary or Secondary Science Fair contact person.
KidsPost – Monthly children’s newspaper with a circulation of 41,000, which is sent to all county schools. More than half of it is written by local children. The Helen Gilmore Learning Center is a satellite for KidsPost and has monthly meetings to teach writing/journalism skills – the third Thursday of school year months, 4:30 to 5:30. Many of our reporters’ articles are published. Call 588-3088 if interested.
County Libraries – Most Palm Beach County Libraries have a weekly or monthly children’s story time. Check for times. The Summit Library on Summit Boulevard, just West of Congress Avenue, has an excellent Children’s Library.
Spelling Bee – Check with School District offices – 434-8000.
Toastmaster’s Club – Curriculum for youngsters.
Debate – Schools sponsor teams in the upper grades. Check the Internet for more info.
Florida Stage, Manalapan – They have a yearly contest to see which youngsters, elementary to high school, write the best plays. Prizes include $500 savings bonds. The winners have excerpts of their plays performed by professional actors the night of the awards ceremony.
Jupiter Historical Society
Historical Society of the Palm Beaches – They now have the top floor of the old West Palm Beach Courthouse for a museum. They have excellent children’s curriculum which is being woven into fourth grade and eighth grade Florida history in the public schools. They have a very good film on county history.
The Historical Society of the Palm Beaches also has a fabulous film, called “The Night 2,000 Died.” It includes interviews by young, Glades, gifted children. They interviewed survivors of the 1928 hurricane, one of the worst in America’s history. Many of those interviewed are now dead.

Lake Worth History Museum – Lake Avenue and Federal Highway. Excellent museum upstairs.
Palm Beach County Historical Museum – Located on North Dixie Highway in downtown, West Palm Beach, the old county courthouse, built in 1916, has been recently authentically restored. The second and third floors have an excellent collection and display of the county’s interesting history, with docents providing interesting details. Lantana Town Manager, Mike Bornstein, served as the model for the county’s unique Barefoot Mailman exhibit. Bornstein re-enacts the shoeless walk from Lantana to Miami yearly and takes participants.
Seminole Indian Village, Dania, FL. Check out the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s website at www.seminoletribe.com Also visit the wonderful Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum in Okalee, Florida in South Florida. Don’t miss the excellent film chronicling the history of the Seminoles. Your child is sure to find something interesting in the Gift Shop. It has excellent children’s books about the Seminoles, also.

Home – Do lots of cooking and baking at home to afford many fraction measuring opportunities. Buy your child his/her own flexible measuring tape. Every child loves the one that retracts by pushing a button. Be sure your child has his/her own foot ruler, yardstick AND metric measuring tools. Many tests call for children to be familiar with these quantity tools. Encourage your child to measure bed, length of a bike, skateboard, etc. From an early age – on let your child have his/her own bedside clock. Start early showing your child how to recognize wake-up time, lunch time, favorite TV program time, dinner time and bedtime on the clock. Help your child quantify the world around him/her.

Odyssey of the Mind – Children are trained in creative problem solving in this organization. Small teams of five children compete with other county youngsters to win a chance to go to state and national competitions.
